Rana develops a practical approach for lasting nature restoration

Restore. Measure. Activate.

Creates ecological value by integrating landscape elements into working farmland, including hedgerows, tree lines and ponds.

Verifies ecological value through long-term ecological monitoring and science-based indicators.

Activates verified ecological value through Nature Equity Units (NEUs) to help fund future nature restoration.

In Aalten, Rana is developing its first large-scale restoration pilot in collaboration with local farmers and the Dutch Cultural Landscape Association (VNC). Across approximately 240 hectares surrounding the Aaltense Goor nature reserve, the project focuses on restoring historic hedgerow landscapes (“houtwallen”) to strengthen biodiversity and ecological connectivity between nature areas and surrounding farmland.

The pilot combines ecological restoration with long-term biodiversity monitoring and serves as the first practical validation of Rana’s approach.

Why Nature needs Rana.

Nature restoration struggles to scale because it is still largely organised project by project. Funding, execution and reporting are rebuilt from scratch for every initiative. As a result, restoration remains fragmented and difficult to sustain over time.

Rana develops a practical approach for lasting nature restoration by combining ecological restoration with long-term biodiversity monitoring. By measuring ecological value in a consistent way, Rana explores how restoration projects can become easier to repeat and continue over time.

Rana has already built a strong network with ecologists from NIOO-KNAW, HAS, AERES, Radboud University and WUR, and experienced practitioners like the VNC. With this founder, Rana can achieve great success in biodiversity restoration.
